College comes with its own set of unique challenges for every student. Thankfully, most colleges offer programs that allow accommodations to those who need them to allow them to succeed just like any other student. So don’t limit yourself simply because you feel like you learn differently than others, we all go through life at our own pace!

In this article we will discuss:

  • What is Autism?
  • How Does Autism Impact Learning?
  • Best Colleges For Autistic Students

What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder, also known as ASD, is a neurodevelopmental condition that changes the way that those who have it think, socialize, and learn. It is not always obvious when an individual has ASD and it is often diagnosed in people’s lives at any age. Some people even lived a majority of their lives without even knowing that their brain works slightly differently than others. This is often because, like other neurodevelopmental conditions, ASD is a spectrum and can affect some people more than others.

What are some common signs of autism?

As previously mentioned, ASD is a spectrum so some individuals may have certain traits that others don’t have. As a result of this, not all autistic behaviors means someone has autism and someone who doesn’t possess all ASD behaviors also doesn’t mean that they don’t have autism.

However some of the most common signs of autism include:

  • The compulsive need to do repetitive behavior. This could include repeating a certain phrase, or fidgeting, or being seemingly restless.
  • Most individuals with ASD have hyper fixations or interests that they are very focused on.
  • ASD can make it difficult for individuals to hold a conversation or find it hard to pick up on social cues.
  • Those with ASD like set routines and often feel anxious or worried when schedules veer outside of the norm.
  • ASD can make it hard for people to multitask causing them to struggle with time management.

While ASD can make some people struggle more than others, it is important to note that that does not mean attending college or having a successful career is impossible. However, it does mean that choosing the right college that is accommodating to their needs is all the more important.

How Does Autism Impact Learning?

ASD does have the tendency to make learning more difficult. This can make it harder for them to be in an enclosed environment for long periods of time like most colleges require. Autism can impact learning in a variety of different ways and can cause individuals to experience:

  • A harder time sitting still and focusing on a single subject for large amounts of time.
  • A harder time processing and memorizing information.
  • Focusing in environments that disrupt their sensory (a room with lights that are too bright or a room that is too loud)
  • High levels of test anxiety or fear.
  • Difficulty understanding abstract concepts.
  • Delayed comprehension skills.

Despite these challenges, 34% of autistic college students complete their degree within six years. While sometimes having a neurodevelopmental condition can seem like an obstacle, it is important to remember to face adversity and continue to believe that anything you set your mind to is truly possible.

University of Washington

Similarly to the University of Arizona, the University of Washington is known for its highly inclusive environment and well-rounded student initiatives. The University of Washington also offers Disability Resources for Students (DRS) that provide them with accommodations and services that can help autistic students feel more comfortable in their surrounding environment. The DRS program recognizes that the needs of autistic students are different and that sensory issues tend to inhibit their ability to learn. Therefore, they accommodate this by allowing students to take their test in a different environment to prevent them from getting anxious or overwhelmed.

The University of Washington also offers the Autism Empowerment Initiative which normalizes being open about neurodivergent conditions and creates a supporting and welcoming environment for those with ADS. The Autism Empowerment Initiative promotes peer workshops and mentoring in order to ensure their school is a welcoming place for all students. With an annual in-state tuition rate of $12,000 and an out-of-state tuition rate of $40,000, it can be seen as a pricey school. However, loan options are always available for students who wish to cut down the cost. With an acceptance rate of 47%, the University of Washington is a great choice!

Temple University

Temple University is located in Philadelphia and this school not only has a great location but great academic programs. Similar to the University of Washington, Temple University offers a Disability Resources for Students (DRS) program that helps students achieve their dreams! This supportive environment not only strengthens bonds between students but also reflects the compassionate nature of all members of faculty. No student will ever be left behind at Temple University and students are encouraged to reach out for educational assistance whenever they feel like it is necessary.

All students face an immense amount of stress when entering college, and this is rightfully so! New experiences can be extremely difficult to manage, especially for those with ADS who find it hard to deal with change. But programs such as DRS allow for students to become more accepting of new experiences and slowly realize that sometimes not all change is bad.

With an average tuition rate of $21,000 for in-state tuition and $35,000 for out-of-state tuition, Temple University is on the higher end of schools on this list. However, it does have an acceptance rate of 79% which can make it a great safety school option for those who wish to compare financial aid packages with other schools before fully committing.

Clemson University

Clemson University is located in the beautiful state of South Carolina, but its uniqueness doesn’t stop there. Clemson University offers a program called ClemsonLIFE, which stands for the Learning Is For Everyone program. This program is specifically designed for those with learning disabilities and provides both academic and social support for students in need. From life coach skills training to job preparation, Clemson University guarantees that every student leaves with a bright future and readiness to jumpstart their career.

With an average tuition rate of $15,000 for in-state tuition and $39,000 for out-of-state tuition,  Clemson University also offers financial aid opportunities for students that need monetary assistance. Looking into financial aid is a great way to reduce student stress and allow them to fully devote their time towards educational improvement. With an acceptance rate of 43% it is more competitive than other schools, however, it is definitely worth applying to!
